Kids Boxing in Shellharbour: What Parents Need to Know

Your kid has energy. Loads of it.
They bounce off walls at home, zone out at a desk all day at school, and every sport you've tried so far has either bored them by week three or turned into a logistical nightmare with weekend games, uniforms, and rain cancellations.
Then someone mentions boxing. And your first thought is probably: "I don't want my kid getting punched in the face."
Fair enough. That's the most common thing parents say before they walk through our door. So let's clear that up right now, along with everything else you need to know about kids boxing at Box & Breathe in Shellharbour.
No, Your Kid Won't Get Punched
There is no sparring in our kids program. None. The older groups (10-13) play shoulder tip as a game. That's it.
Our head coach's approach to contact comes from studying how they train in Cuba and Thailand, two of the most successful boxing nations on earth. Their philosophy is simple: you don't damage yourself in the gym. Sparring is reserved for fighters preparing for a fight, and even then it's controlled, technical, and supervised.
Your child will hit pads held by a coach. They'll hit the bag. They'll shadow box. They'll learn technique, footwork, and discipline. They will not hit another child.
Three Age Groups, One System
We don't throw all the kids in together. The program is split into three groups:
Junior Kids Boxing | Senior Kids Boxing | Youth Boxing |
Ages 4-6 | Ages 7-9 | Ages 10-13 |
Each group runs the same structured system but adjusted for their age and stage. A 5-year-old isn't doing the same drills as a 12-year-old. But they're all learning real boxing fundamentals from day one.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
Here's exactly what happens when your kid walks in. No surprises.
Line up. Everyone starts at the back of the ring. The coach explains the technique they're working on for the week and gives a quick demo of how and why it works. This isn't random. Box & Breathe runs a 9-week curriculum, so every session builds on the last.
Skip. One round of skipping to warm up. Gets the heart rate up and the coordination going.
Shadow sparring. The kids come into the ring with the coach and shadow spar the techniques being called out. Other coaches watch and help with form. No contact. Just movement, technique, and repetition.
Rotations. The group splits up. Some kids hit pads with a coach one-on-one. Others do a drill on the mat specific to the week's technique. Others do a cardio or footwork drill. They rotate through every station, round by round, so everyone gets personal time with a coach.
Game time. They play a game. Because they're kids and training should be fun.
Finish. A bodyweight strength exercise to close the session. And everyone gets a lolly on the way out.
The 9-week curriculum is key. Most kids fitness programs are random sessions with no structure. Your child isn't just "doing boxing." They're learning one specific offensive technique and one defensive technique each week, building on top of what they learned the week before. That's how real skill develops. |
What Changes in Your Kid
Parents sign their kids up for fitness. They stay because of what happens outside the gym.
After a few months of consistent training, here's what parents at Box & Breathe typically notice:
Listening skills improve. Every session starts with the coach explaining a concept. The kids learn to stand still, listen, and then execute. That transfers directly to the classroom and to home.
Attitude shifts. Boxing teaches respect. You respect the coach, you respect your training partners, you respect the space. Kids who struggle with attitude find structure they can actually buy into because it feels earned, not forced.
They start caring about others. When you train alongside other kids every week, you build real friendships. Older kids start helping younger ones. They cheer each other on. The gym becomes a community, not just a class.
Confidence grows. Not the loud, show-off kind. The quiet kind. The kind where a kid who used to hide behind a parent walks in, wraps their own hands, and gets to work. That transformation is worth more than any trophy.
Fitness and coordination come along for the ride. Boxing develops hand-eye coordination, balance, footwork, core strength, and cardiovascular fitness. But these aren't the goal. They're the by-product of learning a real skill.
Our grading system rewards all of this. It's not just about how hard they punch or how fast they move. Kids earn their next coloured shirt by showing improvement in attitude, listening, care for their peers, fitness, and skill. Because the goal isn't to build great boxers. It's to build great humans. The boxing skill is just a by-product.
What It Costs
$30 per week. That covers 3 sessions. No lock-in contract. Cancel any time.
That works out to $10 per session. For reference, most kids sport registrations run $15-25 per session once you factor in fees, equipment, and weekend game costs.
As your child progresses through the grading system, they earn coloured shirts at each level. Those are included. No extra charge.
There's also a family membership: $100 per week gets 2 unlimited adult memberships and 2 kids memberships. If you've been thinking about boxing yourself, this is the move.
What Your Kid Needs to Bring
Water. That's it.
We provide the gloves and wraps. Wear comfortable clothes they can move in. Runners are fine. No special equipment needed for the first session or any session after that.
The Free Trial
The first class is free. No payment details. No commitment. No sign-up-on-the-day pressure.
Your kid comes in, does the session, and you both decide if it's the right fit. Most parents stay and watch from the side. You'll see exactly what happens and how your child responds to it.
If they love it, great. If it's not for them, no hard feelings.

"Is My Kid Too Young? Too Unfit? Too Shy?"
We hear this every week. The answer is the same every time: no.
The 4-6 age group exists specifically for tiny humans who can barely stand still. The whole point is to meet them where they are and build from there.
Unfit? Boxing will fix that. That's literally what it does.
Shy? The calm environment, the structure, and the fact that every kid earns respect through effort (not volume) makes this a place where quiet kids thrive. Some of the biggest transformations we've seen have been with the kids who barely spoke on day one.
Ready to Try It?
